I've been typing for 20 years. I'm fast. I make few mistakes. And still I was often exhausted after an hour of writing — not mentally, but physically. Shoulders, neck, wrists.

Then I tried Mundwerk. And I've been typing significantly less ever since.

What is Mundwerk?

Mundwerk is a small app that hides in the macOS menu bar. No dock icon, no large window. Just press <kbd>⌥Space</kbd>, speak, done. The text appears directly where the cursor is — whether in Notion, in Mail, in VS Code, or in a terminal.

The special part: speech recognition runs entirely locally on the Mac. No cloud upload, no internet connection required, no privacy concerns.

The first 10 minutes

Installation takes two minutes. After that, briefly setting up the hotkey and you're done. On the first test, I was surprised how fast recognition is — and how accurate. Even technical terms that Apple Dictation regularly gets wrong (repository, pull request, GDPR) came out flawlessly.

The visual feedback — a teal glow at the screen edge as soon as Mundwerk is actively listening — makes the decisive difference compared to Apple's built-in dictation. You know immediately: the app is listening.

After one month

Today I use Mundwerk for:

Emails: first draft always by voice, then a quick revision

Slack messages: long explanations I just speak

Notes: ideas that come to me on the move, dictated immediately

Commit messages: yes, really. Surprisingly handy.

My typing load has dropped by an estimated 30 %. My neck has stopped complaining.

What I had underestimated

The learning function. Mundwerk remembers corrections. If I correct a word twice, it's usually recognised correctly the third time. After a month, the personal vocabulary is noticeably more precise.

Equally underestimated: the system-wide integration. Mundwerk works in any application — terminals, web forms, native apps, Electron apps. Where Apple Dictation sometimes goes silent, Mundwerk types reliably.

What still needs improvement

Mundwerk is exclusively for macOS on Apple Silicon — no iOS, no Windows, no Intel Mac. Anyone working cross-platform will still need to type.

Also: the product is still young. There's no large community, no plugin ecosystem. Anyone looking for a mature power-user solution with a thousand settings is better off with Superwhisper.

Verdict after one month

Mundwerk hasn't changed my entire workflow. But it has taken over a measurable part of it — smoothly, without cloud, without subscription. At €14.99 (currently €8.99 with code
LAUNCH
until 2026-06-19) it's exceptional value.

My tip for getting started: dictate consistently for emails and notes for three days. After that, going back to typing only feels difficult.
